CTS Seminar: Centre for Transport Studies, UCL
Urban Street Planning and Design: A German Perspective
Prof. Dr Ing Helmut Holzapfel
Institute for Integrated Transport Planning
University of Kassel
16.00 Wednesday 5 October 2011
Chadwick 218
Chadwick Building, UCL
Abstract
The role of urban streets within a city as places where people can meet or talk has been neglected for quite some years in Germany. Research projects have shown that the dominating function of streets as a 'Link', primarily for through traffic, has reduced the quality of living in urban quarters.
The seminar will describe new approaches to street planning and design in Germany, which set out to restore the traditional qualities of urban streets.
