Maybe I killed this off with my dismissiveness
or I just haven't seen other responses
I apologise for my abruptness
I have been thinking of a talk (/ led a conversation) I gave recently on
painting, though I brought in poetry and music, which I thought went ok:
the actual subject not being my choice; but afterwards I was mildly taken
to task for not saying anything about "the spirit of art"
I asked why nothing had been said at the time and got no clear answer.
Then I went on and said I feel that _spirit of art_ doesn't mean anything;
and that really does seem to have caused offence. That was not my
intention.
Yet my response to Millicent's question was not just a slight difference;
but an incomprehension at the entire thing, denotations, connotations and
any dark matters between. As if I had been asked, say, what features of
thirteenth century English heraldic design are the most important to you
in terms of personal hygiene?
Salvation? Pauline salvation?
I won't pursue this if no one else does. It's just bothered me that I
might, through my abruptness, have given the impression that I am ready to
bite a head off.
No.
