Thanks for everyone's great posts!
Very briefly, Henry's incisive comments reminded me of an exhibition in Liverpool at Bluecoat: "Democratic Promenade" and in particular the work, "Mr Democracy" by Oliver Walker, which appeared as a reworking from its initial showing in 2008.
The work features 1,000 plastic dolls imported from China, programmed to recite a written constitution for the U.K., which was commissioned by the artist in Shanghai as a response to the fact that the U.K is one of a very few countries without a written constitution.
I am also very pleased to introduce to the list the artist Paolo Cirio as an invited respondent. He was recently involved at both Rewire and the Abandon Normal Devices Festival 2011.
He is a media artist, working in various fields: net-art, street-art, video-art, public-art, marketing-art, software-art and experimental storytelling. As his website states:
"He investigates into perception and creation of cultural, political and economic realities manipulated by new modes of control over information's power."

I'm really looking forward to seeing the various strands of the discussion on the theme of copyright unfold further...
Best
