Having seen the replies so far I thought I would chuck in a bit more info!
Unfortunately the watercolour has no date, artist, provenance, etc. I also
had thought of Tywarnhaile but dismissed that when I looked at my photos. I
also thought of East Cornwall, but the landscape, even allowing for artistic
licence, made me think more of Wales. Another area I thought of, which I
don't really know the mining history of, is Exmoor. The construction
material could be sandstone, red killas or brick! I also think that what one
is seeing is the inside of the house, the wall this side having collapsed.
This would explain the rectangular holes, in particular, the two holes with
dark diagonal paint strokes. Could these be the rotted remains of the cross
beams which support the spring beams?
Pete, it is not a fortification but an engine house! I agree there is a lot
of artistic licence about it, but having been a member of The Trevithick
Society for over 40 years (I joined the CEPS at a very young age!!!) and
photographed engine house all over the world, I'm pretty good at recognising
them!
