CAN QUALITATIVE RESEARCH HAVE IMPACTIS IT EVEN
EVIDENCE-BASED?
Martyn Hammersley
Professor of Educational and Social Research
Open University
Current demands that social science should maximize its impact
are closely related to the idea that it must serve
evidence-based policymaking and practice. I will examine the
assumptions built into these demands, both about the
relationship between research and policymaking/practice and
about the nature of scientific enquiry. I will show that these
assumptions are defective not only in relation to qualitative
work but to science more generally. Towards the end of the talk
I will examine broader notions of the 'impact' that qualitative
work can have, for example as embodied in the idea of a public
sociology.
