Valerie Mizrahi, Director of the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine and professor at the University of Cape Town, began her career as a scientist working on HIV. She has spent the last 15 years working on TB, a huge problem in a country with the seventh highest TB incidence in the world, and where the disease is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among people living with HIV. Her research efforts have led to pivotal TB drug discoveries, but there is still a long way to go. Join her in conversation about her passion for research and development in low-income countries such as South Africa.
This event is part of Exchanges at the Frontier, a partnership with the BBC World Service, and the audio recording of the event (including audience questions) will be made into a radio programme for broadcast in December 2011. This is therefore a great opportunity to question a leading scientist on her work in infectious disease and health in the developing world, and to contribute to a discussion that will go out to an audience of millions.
The event will take place at 18.00-19.15 on Thursday 20 October. The event is free but tickets must be booked in advance through the website: http://www.wellcomecollection.org/whats-on/events/exchanges-at-the-frontier-81.aspx
