Hi,
I am looking for more participants to take part in answering several questions for my dissertation research. I have already posted the message below but please let me know if you would like to take part or I would appreciate it if you could pass this message on to anyone you think may be interested.
My name is Rachel Lipman and I am a third year undergraduate in Sociology at Newcastle University. My research project is about online interaction and whether it benefits people with disabilities in relation to forming and maintaining relationships. As well as exploring peoples’ experiences of online interaction, my research will also look at people’s perceptions of how face-to-face interactions are shaped by their disabilities. There has been quite a lot of research in sociology on social life and relationships online. However, most of this research has focused only on able-bodied people. I’m interested in extending this research to look at the experiences of people with disabilities. My research is informed by current academic work in disability studies and inspired by the experiences of growing up with my brother who was born with several physical disfigurements such as a shorter right leg and missing digits on his right hand and toes on his right foot. Not only have I been witness to his struggle through operations for many years which resulted in him missing some years of school, but I have also witnessed how his disability affects his social life on a day to day basis. He has relied heavily on the internet and interactive sites which enable him to meet others and form relationships, including his present girlfriend.
My methods for doing this research consist of both face-to-face and online interviews. Online interviews will be conducted by email in which participants will respond to a short list of open-ended questions which I will send by email.
If you would like to take part in this research please email me at [log in to unmask] stating that you would like to participate and I will then send you more information and a consent form to confirm your participation.
Thanks,
Rachel Lipman
