While Mervyn Alleyne is well known as a pioneer in the study of Creole
languages, he has also made important contributions in areas such as
Cultural Studies and History. He is the author of seminal books in various
fields of inquiry, including COMPARATIVE AFRO-AMERICAN: AN
HISTORICAL-COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ENGLISH-BASED AFRO-AMERICAN DIALECTS
(1980), ROOTS OF JAMAICAN CULTURE (1988), and THE CONSTRUCTION AND
REPRESENTATION OF RACE AND ETHNICITY IN THE CARIBBEAN AND THE WORLD: AN
HISTORICAL-COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ENGLISH-BASED AFRO-AMERICAN DIALECTS
(2002) and JAMAICA FOLK MEDICINE: A SOURCE OF HEALING (with Arvilla Payne,
2004). This panel presents and pays tribute to the significance of the
insights offered by his scholarship on the Caribbean. It will pay special
attention to the interdisciplinary nature of Alleyne’s work, engaging past
insights alongside compelling new questions.
