Dear Mona,

For some of us, the roman importation of animals do not exist at large scale, perhaps only
commercial treks.

Some big bovids can exist during the first millenium BC, but they are not coming from Italia. Who
knows well the Italian cattle between -400 et 400 ? I do not know synthesis about Italian cattle
proving that a lot of big cattle (really existing only past the 30's-40's AD from metatarsus
osteometry, Forest et Rodet-Belarbi 2002) was living there and could be importated in Gaul from
Italia at large scale.

Ours publication about these items :

Carrère et al 2002 : CARRERE I., FOREST V., RODET-BELARBI I. (2002) : Osteometry and
shifts in the bovine population in France. in "Mouvements ou déplacements de populations
septembre 2000, Gardeisen A. (ed.), BAR International Series 1017, p.43-58

Gallia, 59, Paris, pp.273-306.

About osteometry of bovids for others periods :

Marandet (dir.), Presses Universitaires
de Perpignan, pp. 27-91 + corr.

It's probably the same for equids :

table-ronde, rencontre de Saint-Julien, 18-19 novembre 2004, Archives d'écologie préhistorique,
Toulouse, pp.61-71.
