Dear Christine,
> I have a question on the template used when normalizing functional images to MNI space, using Dartel toolbox. My dataset is one group of dementia patients and one group of normal controls.

Alternatively, I wonder whether I could use the template created for all subjects in the dataset. I compared the results from these two approach and the latter one used group-average template seems to look slightly better.
Indeed, when using the "normalise to MNI space" option, for the "DARTEL template" you should select the template created for the group (the last iteration; most likely Template_6.nii,1 for the gray matter potion). SPM calculates the warp of the group template to MNI space, and then combines this with the warps from each subject to template space, so that in the end each subject's data is in MNI space.
Hope this helps!
Best regards,
Jonathan
