I think perhaps the cat (and Kipling) thought that it ought to have
been "didn't catch any mice." Actually, of course, there's no reason
it shouldn't be "caught no mice" -- it's not a double negative -- but
perhaps grammar instruction at the time favored "didn't ... any" over
the direct negation of "no."
