The recent report Data Centres: their use, value and impact (http://www.jisc.ac.uk/publications/generalpublications/2011/09/datacentres.aspx) was co-sponsored by RIN and by JISC through the Managing Research Data Programme (http://www.jisc.ac.uk/whatwedo/programmes/mrd.aspx).
To mark the launch of this important report, RIN are hosting a discussion event at the Wellcome Collection asking ‘How do we make the case for data centres?’ http://www.rin.ac.uk/news/events/data-centres-their-use-value-and-impact
The report suggests that researchers value data centres highly, and that they derive considerable benefits from the ready availability of curated datasets. However, it remains difficult to articulate this value, both upwards - to policymakers and funders who can provide funding and mandates to support data centres - and downwards - to the researchers themselves, many of whom remain reluctant to populate centres with their own data.
The event will therefore ask a panel of speakers to discuss the value proposition for research data centres, and consider the best way to communicate this value to a number of audiences.
We are pleased to have the following speakers at the event:
Kevin Ashley, Digital Curation Centre
Professor Matthew Collins, BioArCh, University of York
Graham Stark, Virtual Worlds
Mark Thorley, Natural Environment Research Council
Matthew Woollard, UK Data Archive
The event will be followed by a drinks reception, and an opportunity to view the Wellcome Collection’s galleries.
A programme will be available shortly. If you would like to know more about this event, or are interested in booking a place, please email [log in to unmask] Places are limited.
