Dear member of the molecular dynamics news
Stockholm University announces: PhD position in theoretical molecular
physics
at The Department of Physics, Stockholm University
Reference nr: SU 402 33-0128-11
Deadline for the application: October 15, 2011.
Subject description
Are you interested in the basic physical mechanisms driving chemical
reactions? Theoretical molecular physics is at the border between chemistry
and physics. We study molecular processes of systems small enough that a
quantum mechanical description is necessary and possible.
The molecular physics group at Stockholm University consists of 20
members, five of whom are PhD students. The Physics Department is an
internationally lively research environment, situated in the AlbaNova
University Center and has about 180 employees, 250 undergraduate students
and 80 PhD students. For more information about the Physics Department and
the research see http://www.fysik.su.se.
Project description
How can the molecular bonds break when a molecule recombines with a tiny
electron without almost any collision energy? We do not only calculate what
fragments are formed when for example positively and negatively charged
ions collide, but we also want to understand what happens during the
process. Does the reaction proceed directly or does it occur via several
distinct steps? Can intermediate products, i.e., resonances, be formed? The
research project brings together both quantum chemistry calculations and
studies into the molecular dynamics of just such processes. We examine in
detail what effects need be included to obtain a correct description of the
processes. These studies are carried out in close collaboration with
experimental research groups, for which measurements of the theoretical
predictions can be tested. The reactions we study are relevant to many
areas of physics: from explaining the formation of molecules in space to
the control of fusion plasmas. The research project is carried out in close
collaboration with leading theoretical research groups in USA, France, and
Russia. For more information, see http://www.physto.se/~aasal/.
Requirements
To be accepted as a PhD student in physics one should have studied at
least four years at a University and have a BSc in Physics. These studies
must include advances courses in physics during one year and an advanced
degree project (a detailed description of one in progress may do). We seek
a candidate with analytical capacity and good skills in English.
Terms of employment
A PhD education is four years (48 months). The four year PhD program
includes at least three years of research and at most one year of course
work. The position may be extended up to one year if up to 20% teaching
assistance or administration is included in the contract. During the
beginning of the PhD education, the student receives a study grant
(“utbildningsbidrag”) and towards the end of the education, the student
acquires a PhD position (“doktorandanställning”).
Application
Applications should include a letter of intent describing your motivation
for applying, a CV including information on previous education, a copy of
the master thesis (or “examensarbete”), other documents supporting the
applicants competence and suitability for the position, and address, phone
number and e-mail of two reference persons. The application can be written
in English or Swedish. Evaluations will be based on results on University
courses, quality of master’s thesis (or “examensarbete”), references,
interviews and the letter of intent.
For Further information, please contact: Åsa Larson [log in to unmask]
Union representatives are Bo Ekengren (SACO), Lisbeth Häggberg
