Oxfam GB: Humanitarian Support Personnel (HSP) - Policy & Advocacy

SALARY: £23,090 - £29,954 GBP net (take home salary), per annum
This net salary is equivalent to £30,676 - £40,624 GBP UK gross per
annum. Oxfam will meet the tax and social security liabilities of post
holder in addition to net salary

Oxfam offers a wide range of benefits, including over 43 days
holiday/TOIL per year, pension and medical cover, living and
accommodation costs covered during deployments. This post is unaccompanied.

Location: Various worldwide Contract: Open-ended Hours: Full-time - 36
hours per week
Closing Date: 2nd October 2011
Interview Date: 14th October 2011

Who we are
Across the world, Oxfam responds to natural disasters, conflict and
humanitarian emergencies which affect millions of people. Our
Humanitarian and Security Issues policy and advocacy team provides
timely analysis on these rapidly changing situations and influences the
decisions-makers who can make a difference. Nowadays, in addition to
sending in water engineers and logisticians as part of an emergency
response, we need to send in a policy advisor as part of the team too so
that we can persuade governments, the UN and the international community
to do what is needed to save lives and livelihoods.

The role
With deployments normally ranging from 4 weeks to 4 months, this roving
post is a unique opportunity to work in a huge range of countries and
across humanitarian issues. You’ll be deployed to the humanitarian
situations where there is greatest need for clear and rapid analysis to
tell the world what is happening and persuade decision-makers to do what
is needed.

You’ll get straight to the heart of issues, quickly analysing the key
issues and establishing strong advocacy strategies. You’ll also engage
with governments, key decision-makers and United Nations representatives
– using your tact, diplomacy and outstanding interpersonal skills to
shape and influence opinion and bring about real change. At the same
time, you’ll be a spokesperson for Oxfam telling national and
international press what is happening and what needs to be done. You’ll
be part of a national and international team, building capacity and
consulting closely with colleagues so that our advocacy strategies are
sustainable and informed by those closest to the ground.

What we are looking for
You’ll have proven experience of humanitarian work along with a profound
understanding of the types of policy issues involved and the appropriate
solutions available. Your humanitarian background will be supported by
the capacity to crystallise issues in complex situations while thinking
strategically – understanding global trends and dynamics beyond the
context of your current deployment. Able to produce excellent written
materials you’ll also be a persuasive representative with a track record
of influencing decision makers at all levels. You will be a calm,
adaptable and sensitive team player with excellent inter-personal
skills, able to support and consult colleagues in pressurised contexts
and provide policy leadership and vision to a global team. Willing to
travel at short notice – often to difficult circumstances. Fluency in
written and spoken English.

To apply
If you have the rare blend of personal and professional qualities we
seek, this could be the most exciting, demanding and rewarding challenge
of your career to date.
