This story is all so sad and reminds me of my schooling in the 1960s when the romany gypsies were being housed in council housing - a number of my friends were gypsies and the only thing I struggled with was that they often went back on their travels and I missed them. Many did not choose to move into council houses then. I know there is much more complexity to peoples' lives but nonetheless I do not think that understanding mental health is the way forward. Understanding those communities and how they live differently maybe. Did anyone hear Ewan McColl and Peggy Seager's ballards on Radio 4+ over the summer? It made me weep, this week again ... fifty years later we are asking people to 'move on' 'move on'.
I fear I have come an armchair critic I am afraid ...

Thanks Mark, that thought had crossed my mind which was why I was wondering about other ways that the issue could be engaged with.
I'm not sure what I was suggesting was playing psychology with tenancy law. Having encountered residential environments where communities are under siege it seems reasonable to suggest that they may be under quite a bit of stress and that this could have a harmful effect upon them. I agree that you don't need a psychologist to tell you that though.

Hi Danny et al
I completely appreciate the solidarity and concern motivating your question.
But before Craig gets here I thought I'd chip in and despair at the way that
community psychologists get sucked in to playing the APA game about mental
health assessment as a do anything, go anywhere, get out of jail free card. I
have no idea of the political rights and wrongs of this case - I'm not a
lawyer - but playing psychology with tenancy law (or whatever it is that is
in play) is simply to play straight into the hands of those who would have us
believe that everything is a 'mental health issue'. Sometimes, just
sometimes, maybe it isn't......

Subject: [COMMUNITYPSYCHUK] Dale Farm Evictions
Does anyone know of any work being done with the residents at Dale Farm? One
thing that occurred to me that might be quite helpful is the documentation of
the ways in which you would expect such a toxic environment and violence to
impact upon the mental health of children and adult residents. I don't know
to what extent Basildon Council have any responsibilities in this respect.
Does anyone have any experience of carrying out these sort of assessments or
have other ideas?
Danny
