University of Oxford
Department of Primary Care Health Sciences
Training post in the Statsistics Group Methods Research Fellow
Statistics Group
Grade 6, Full-time
Fixed-term (2 years)
Salary range £25,854 to £30,870 Training budget up to £4,500
A vacancy has arisen for a statistician to undertake research and training in the department’s expanding statistics group. This is an opportunity to begin a career as medical statistician in a highly supportive statistics group within a department that was ranked highest in its field (primary care research) in the Research Assessment Exercise 2008.
The research role is in the novel application of inverse variance methods for meta-analysis (the mathematical synthesis of results from multiple medical studies) to various types of medical study. The department has recently published clinical papers using novel inverse variance analyses. We are now keen to apply the novel methods more widely and to study their properties and applicability in more depth. The successful applicant will use skills in mathematics and statistical programming to study the performance of these new applications in a variety of clinical examples, and to contribute to publications in statistical and/or clinical journals.
The training opportunity is for the applicant to study either a part-time MSc programme, or a series of one-off courses in statistical methods, alongside the research role. The training budget may be used towards fees on a suitable part-time M.Sc. course or on a series of appropriate short courses. The appropriate training path would be agreed between the appointee and the department.
Educated to at least B.Sc. level (or equivalent), the successful candidate will have strong mathematical skills, demonstrable programming ability, experience in statistics, and a commitment to training in clinical research. Good communication skills in mathematics, science and teamwork must be evident. The candidate will be supervised jointly by Dr Richard Stevens, Deputy Director of the Statistics Group, and Professor Richard Hobbs, Head of Department.
