Job reference PCMD-GS-0045R2
This Studentship is based in Exeter.
The Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry with its parent Institutions, the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, are seeking to attract PhD candidates of outstanding ability to join their exciting and rapidly expanding programme of internationally rated research.
As part of our new developments and our commitment to research excellence, applications are invited for a PhD studentship from graduates with a 2:1 or above in Mathematics, Statistics or a health-sciences related subject involving a substantial quantitative component. International students must also have IELTS [International English Language Testing System] score of 7 and above (or equivalent qualification).
There are significant practical and ethical challenges in conducting randomised controlled trials for prevention of dementia. The increasing availability of large population-based studies containing information on cognition and dementia has created new opportunities for using observational data to identify whether treatment for dementia risk factors is effective at reducing dementia risk. An obstacle to using observational data in this way is the bias caused by unmeasured confounding. Recent advances in quasi-experimental methods allow us to obtain more realistic estimates of possible causal associations by taking into account pre-exposure trajectories of cognitive decline. The aim of this PhD is to address key clinical and preventive questions of relevance to dementia by applying appropriate bias reduction methods to data from existing observational studies.
Closing date for application: 7th October 2011. Start date: 1st December 2011
