Yeah, but isn't the 2-file format somewhat backwards compatible? I forget the exact details.

FYI in spm5 and spm8 both img and nii files are nifti except the former uses a 2 file format. If you truly want the old analyze format you can try this tool to convert the files. http://brainimaging.tiddlyspot.com/#nifti2ana
I think there were some messages on the board a couple of years back with other tools.
