When she said the bit about friends with the qualification, I heard that
Facebook ambiguity about the generous, suspect use of "Friends", and as a
way emphasising the guy was available to be a 'real' friend, even more than
a 'friend'. Etc.
I and my lady are about to go a 50 mile trek in the high Sierra. My prayer
is that my body remains a reliable friend on the trail. I am practicing hard
these days with rocks in my backpack and walking sticks, etc. Well, that is
a 'snap' aside!

I like it too, & this whole line.
But would she say (did she say?) "He's cute. They are friends...'? I would
have thought 'they're'....

It is natural to speak of your own weaknesses so winsomely they will seem
strengths, as if everyone else is inadequate if they do not have your
inadequacies.
