Having just been the victim of a web site design on a site where we participated (rather than owned our own destiny) which caused us to create our own site at http://dartmouthmuseum.org from scratch, and which ignored this aspect entirely, when members do redesign their sites does their brief to the designer and implementor include taking all possible steps to maintain integrity of inbound links?
I know this is a challenge when migrating from one CMS to another, but it is not beyond the wit of the new implementation to manage, and it is certainly worth including in the specification when one issues both the design and the implementation invitations to tender. 301 redirects are most certainly the order of the day.
We have a major trawl in progress to sweep up old inbound links and to point them at our new web site. The redesign we were victims of lost them all anyway despite our raising this as a red flag before the migration took place.
