The All-Party Parliamentary Group on the Great Lakes Region of Africa is
recruiting a part-time Associate Coordinator to assist its work in
Parliament and beyond.

The APPG is one of the largest and most active All-Party Groups in
Parliament, with more than 190 members across both Houses. We work to
promote peace, democratic accountability, and sustainable development in
the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Uganda, and Rwanda and to
keep the parliamentarians who make up the Group informed of issues in
the region and able to act effectively to address them. Current areas of
activity include, but are not limited to:
Security and stability in eastern DR Congo and across the Great
Lakes region;
Elections, parliamentary strengthening and democracy across the
region;
Prevention of sexual and gender-based violence especially in DRC
and addressing the roots of the regional conflict;
Changing UK legislation to increase transparency and
accountability for UK-listed companies engaged in the commercial
development of oil, natural gas and minerals
Making regional UK development aid effective
Other policy areas as they arise
The successful candidate will be an adept and flexible communicator who
is able to rapidly assimilate large amounts of information on various
topics and explain these succinctly to a wide variety of audiences.
He/she will be confident managing projects on specific Great Lakes
issues, under the direction of and answerable to the APPG Executive and
wider Membership. It may also include drafting substantial reports,
briefings, speeches and letters; supporting contacts with ministers,
civil servants, NGOs and overseas governments; supporting fundraising
and administration; and contributing to discussion of overall direction
and strategy of the APPG.
Please note that a good general knowledge of the key political issues
relating to the Great Lakes region as well as fluency in French are
essential requirements for this position.
Salary: £22,000 pro-rata for the part-time position, based on a 2-3 day
week.
Flexibility will be an advantage of the post to fit both the varying
requirements of the APPG and the selected candidate, but all conditions
will be subject to discussion and agreement with the successful
candidate at interview. Work will be based at the APPG office in
Parliament for an initial period of six months, with extension by mutual
agreement.
Essential requirements:
Demonstrated expertise in the African Great Lakes region
Fluency in French
Relevant undergraduate degree
At least two years work experience in a relevant context
Ability to draft official reports and communications and analyse large
amounts of information efficiently under pressure
Strongly desirable:
Experience of working in the region
Experience of working in parliamentary, government, or advocacy roles
Specialised experience of one or more of the policy areas outlined above
Knowledge of Swahili also an advantage
