For your purpose simple regressing might be not enough... I'm just
remembering vaguely some papers doing similar things. I think that one
approach might be to look only at slow fluctuation (like in resting state)
in which case you need to apply some frequency filters (not sure about the
details of it). Another possibility is to use ICA in order to isolate
task-unrelated signal, like in the following paper:
