Subject: Resources for teaching Research Data Management skills in the Psychological Sciences now available...
Dear All,
A range of training materials produced by the JISC funded DMTpsych project are now freely available for reuse and repurposing within the community. These are designed to help build capacity and skills in research data management within Psychology postgraduates.
The materials consist of:
* PowerPoint slides on research data management which can be integrated into existing research methods teaching (historical background, classic examples, how to’s etc.)
* A workbook containing Psychology specific guidance on completing the Digital Curation Centre’s online Data Management Planning Tool (which can help Psychologists produce a Data Management Plan* for inclusion within grant applications)
*As readers may be aware research councils are now requesting that grant applications be submitted along with a data management plan which covers both short and long term management along with provision for sharing data more widely within the field.
In summary the PowerPoint slides cover the key issues in data management a discipline relevant manner. To aid in reuse and repurposing each of the six lectures is accompanied by an audio track of them being delivered during trials. Text-based student feedback on a slide-by-slide basis is also included. Hopefully these additional aids will help alleviate the common problem of Powerpoint slides that have been produced elsewhere lacking context or sufficient information for them to be adapted. An attempt has also been made to make slides as self-explanatory as possible.
Whereas the guidance workbook focuses on providing a discipline relevant grounding to each of the 136 possible questions on the DMPT together with a themed worked exemplar. The themed exemplar focuses on a well known Psychology study as though it was completing a contemporary data management plan. The study used was that of J Ridley Stroop (1935), “Studies of interference in serial verbal reactions”, where words are presented in incongruous coloured ink, e.g. RED is printed in blue coloured text, and the effects on reaction time measured and interference inferred. This should be familiar enough for most Psychologists and helps illustrate how each question can be answered in order to construct a robust Data Management Plan.
All materials were developed at the department of Psychology, University of York, in partnership with the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University; with over 50 postgraduate students taking part in the development and trialling of materials.
They can be downloaded under a Creative Commons Licence (CC BY-NC 3.0) from: www.dmtpsych.york.ac.uk<http://www.dmtpsych.york.ac.uk>.
During October 2011 there will be two launch events where members of the Psychology community will be able to find out more about the materials and how they can be embedded within their own teaching.
