Subject: A brief email study
Dear Dr. Campbell,
I am a researcher conducting a brief email survey on Open Educational Resources and their use (in Computer Science Disciplines). My survey targets various categories of educators including instructors from UK. I came across your name from your paper "Two approaches to enable the sharing and reuse of resources across institutions". I would appreciate it if you could spare a few minutes (2 minutes on average) from your busy schedule to answer the following 10 questions as a reply to this email. I value your opinion since part of your research being related to sharing and reuse of learning resources is very relevant to my survey.
Please note that I am planning to make the aggregated results of this survey and the related analysis publicly available.
Thank you,
Christo

SURVEY
Assume you have access to an Open Educational Repository covering all major computer science disciplines and corresponding subjects in a variety of instructional formats: PowerPoint slides, handouts, assignments, tests, problems, solutions, videos etc. The following is a multiple choice questionnaire related to the use of open educational content in Computer Science.
1. Which of the following criteria do you consider essential for selection of the material (resources) regarding your teaching practices?
a. [ ] Completeness of coverage of the subject
b. [ ] Level of complexity (difficulty)
c. [ ] Level of detail
d. [ ] The programming language it is based on
e. [ ] The textbook it is related to
f. [ ] Level of illustration by examples
g. [ ] Recency (currency)
h. [ ] Popularity
i. [ ] The quality of content
j. [ ] The quality of layout
k. [ ] The institution/author it originates from
l. [ ] Any other criteria you consider important, but not listed above?
2. Which of the following resource-type availability do you find most useful in your teaching practice?
a. [ ] Lecture notes
b. [ ] PowerPoint slides
c. [ ] Code examples
d. [ ] Assignments/projects
e. [ ] Tests
f. [ ] Problems
g. [ ] Solutions
h. [ ] Reading lists
i. [ ] Textbooks
j. [ ] Syllabi
k. [ ] Videos
l. [ ] Any other types you consider important, but not listed above?
3. When do you (would you) consider using open educational content in your teaching practice?
a. [ ] When designing a new course
b. [ ] When updating the course material
c. [ ] When no adequate textbook or supplemental material is available
d. [ ] When covering new (emerging) topics
e. [ ] When explaining/clarifying a point or concept
f. [ ] When learning new concepts skills
g. [ ] Other cases? [Please list/describe.]
4. How do you (would you) use an open educational content?
a. [ ] The way it is published
b. [ ] By adapting it to fit my context
c. [ ] By incorporating pieces of open content into my own material
d. [ ] By remixing pieces of open content
5. Which of the following kinds of computer science disciplines and topics do you consider more suitable for use as open educational content?
a. [ ] Established
b. [ ] Fast changing
c. [ ] Emerging
6. There are some tasks such as:
- Find set of PowerPoint slides" matching this syllabus
- Find PowerPoint slides" similar to the material in the file C:\MyStuff\MySlides.ppt
Can you list some tasks or queries that are not addressed by the current resource discovery services, which would have a positive impact on the use of open educational content?
7. What are the most significant barriers to the use of open educational content in teaching?
8. If there are any enablers that you believe could increase the adoption of open educational content in teaching, please list them below with a brief explanation.
