WordPress merged their 'multi-site' and standalone site versions, so a
single instance can handle heaps of different sites. You can also use
plug-ins to manage cached versions of pages, minify the page weight,
etc.
The WordPress instances in the Science Museum's Antenna and Who Am I
galleries manage to cope with thousands of school children commenting,
taking quizzes and voting in polls each day (though as it was based on
the previous version of WordPress it could have been built slightly
differently today - an occupational hazard of building on non-bespoke
CMS).
