Thanks all, that's really useful information.
Tom - I'm asking on behalf of South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture who are undertaking a project to put in touchscreens that will allow visitors to carry out research on their digitised collections. They've been told by their developers that an onscreen keyboard would be "rather difficult to do on a touchscreen". This seems somewhat odd to me given the proliferation of them on smartphones and tablets these days so I can only assume that the system the developers use doesn't have any kind of keyboard functionality built in and that they'd have to develop it from scratch.
It's good to know that there are other museums out there who already have this in place (and particularly that there are some close enough to South Lanarkshire for visits should they so desire!).
Thanks once again to everyone!
Kelvin
