Dear Mary and other forum members,
We entered 3 pupils for the A2. 1 Chinese native speaker and 2
non-Chinese pupils. The native-speaker was awarded an A, the 2
non-Chinese boys were awarded Cs despite being bright, both having a
real passion for Chinese and working incredibly hard. I am certain that
they would have gained an A or A* in any other language.
I am deeply concerned that the overwhelming number of Chinese
native-speakers being entered for the A-Level is not accounted for in
the grade awarding process and makes a good grade almost impossible for
non-Chinese pupils. I am sadly coming to the conclusion that I will
probably have to advise pupils against A-Level Chinese until Edexcel
addresses the issue.
I would be very interested to hear from anyone else who entered
non-Chinese pupils for the A2 exam. Our sample is small and I am open to
persuasion that I am wrong if there are lots of non-Chinese pupils out
there getting As and A*s!
I will be completing Katherine Carruthers' survey and also the ISMLA
survey and would encourage others to do so too. They will be able to
argue much more strongly with big data sets as evidence.
Best wishes,
Andrew Hunt

Subject: Re: AS/A2 and GCSE results for Chinese Summer 2011
I note from the ALL report on this year's A levels
http://www.all-languages.org.uk/uploads/files/Events/ALL%20A-Level%20Res
ults%20Report%202011.pdf that the number of entries for A level
Chinese were up by 865. I am interested to know to what extent these
are non-native speaker entries or whether there are more Chinese pupils
currently studying in England. If your school entered non-native pupils
for AS or A2 Chinese, how did they do?
Thanks
Mary

Subject: AS/A2 and GCSE results for Chinese Summer 2011
Dear Colleague
I am writing to ask if you would click on the link below and fill in the
following questionnaire about your school's Chinese results this summer.
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Chinese_exam_result
The Chinese Networks team is trying to collect as much data on this as
possible so that:
* We can use this to celebrate and demonstrate the growth of the
study of Chinese across the country with key stakeholders and those in
government
* We are aware as quickly as possible of any issues arising so
that we can have discussions with the Exam Boards if necessary.
The form is focussing on GCSE and AS in particular, but we would very
much like to know about your A2 and IB results. Please do report these
results (and any others) in the comments box.
Please be assured that the results of an individual school are for our
internal purposes only, to be used in looking at overall trends across
the sector.
Really hope that you will take the time to fill this in and return it as
soon as possible. The 'done' button sends the survey to us
automatically. You can either do the whole lot after the GCSE results
come in next week or enter your school's AS results this week first.
When you press 'done', you will still be able to go back to the form to
fill in the second half of it next week. If there is anything else you
want to make us aware of specifically, please do follow this up with an
email to

Best wishes and thanks in advance
