Well spotted, Graham - it does look very interesting, but there doesn't seem to be any mention of consulting HERs on the project website; which is a bit odd considering the amount of sites that we will have recorded that won't be found in any other source?
Unfortunately, this seems to happen quite often; I've been to several 'meetings of minds' where the academic community draws a blank when it comes to consulting HERs; a good example (at least locally) has been the re-boot of the Victoria County History; at first there were no plans to consult us at all - and I still really have to press for them to do so!
Thanks
Alex

Subject: The English Landscapes and Identities Project
Hi all,
I have just heard about a project called "The English Landscapes and Identities Project" to be carried out by the School of Archaeology at the University of Oxford - more details can be found on the School of Archaeology's news webpage; http://www.arch.ox.ac.uk/news/items/99.html or a press release from the University of Oxford released yesterday; http://www.ox.ac.uk/media/news_stories/2011/110208_1.html.
I personally haven't heard about this before, and was alerted to this through a post on the archaeology/technology mailing list Antiquist who'd seen the following article in the Telegraph; http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/earthnews/8675237/Project-to-map-ancient-landscape-of-England-may-reveal-burial-grounds-under-your-house.html
It looks a really interesting (and ambitious) project, and it will be fascinating to look at research at this national level. It does raise some questions about how this will fit with Historic Environment Records.
Can anyone from the project, or one of their listed 'partners' (English Heritage, the Archaeology Data Service, the Portable Antiquities Scheme or the British Museum) tell us (the HER community) any more about this? For example, how it will fit into work being undertaken by HERs, whether HERs will be consulted, whether links to HER records (and online HERs) be part of the project, how it will link with Heritage Gateway, etc??
I have copied in the principle investigator, Professor Chris Gosden (http://www.arch.ox.ac.uk/CG1.html), to see if he can let HERs know more about this project.
Best regards,
Graham

Subject: [Antiquist] Map of all prehistoric archaeology in England by the University of Oxford
I just came across this link via Twitter, which claims that the University of Oxford will be creating an online map of prehistoric England called "Portal to the Past".
"Most of the data will be from English Heritage aerial photographs showing ancient sites of interest. There is also £100 million spent every year by developers carrying out archaeological research on sites before building work begins and private research by museums and individuals.
Material will also be drawn from county archives, databases of ancient coins, and the Portable Antiquity Scheme (which records the archaeological finds made by metal detectors). Oxford researchers will work with the British Museum, the Archaeology Data Service and local history experts with a good knowledge of the period."

Sounds like an ambitious project, but would be amazing if they manage it. I wonder how SMRs and HERs will feel about it? And I hope that it will be a web service with an API.
Cheers,
Tom
