*** SENT ON BEHALF OF UWE RING ***
Russell Pysklywec from the University of Toronto in Canada ([log in to unmask]) and Uwe Ring from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand ([log in to unmask]) want to draw the attention of prospecting postdocs from the UK and New Zealand to the Canadian Commonwealth Scholarships Program:
http://www.scholarships-bourses.gc.ca/scholarships-bourses/non_can/ccsp_pdrf-pcbc_brpd.aspx?lang=eng
The deadline for applications is 15 November 2011. Russ and Uwe will strongly support applicants and are prepared to help to put an application together.
Russ and Uwe are interested in finding a postdoc for working on a joint project of theirs on eclogite exhumation:
Project description
Eclogite is a metamorphic crustal rock that has higher density than any other crustal or mantle rock. Therefore, eclogite should commonly sink into the mantle after its formation. This, however, is obviously not always the case as we find eclogite in basically all orogens. Our project explores, mainly through numerical modelling, boundary conditions that allow the exhumation of eclogite in collision zones. We will use thermomechanical computational modelling to investigate the dynamics of exhumation of eclogite during collision. The experiments will focus on observables associated with the model tectonics that can be reconciled with available geological/geochemical constraints (e.g., structure, metamorphic history). The geodynamic experiments will use already established computational codes and higher level scripting languages (e.g., Matlab) for post-processing; as such experience in computing and coding will be required.
