Call for Papers: "Euro-Mediterranean Mobilities and Territorialities"
Association of American Geographers 2012 Annual Meeting, NY, NY, USA
Organizers: David Saurí and Antoni Durà (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona), Josep Vicent Boira (Universitat de València), David Prytherch (Miami University)
Contemporary Europeans find themselves at the center of inter-linked processes -- territoriality and mobility -- that are key concerns of human geography today. Geographers increasingly recognize that territoriality is a relational process, mobility transcends 'transport,' and such spatialities are mutually constituted. And writings emphasize the importance of studying everyday spatial practices, which are often more fluid and creative than traditional theoretical frameworks might allow. Nowhere is this more evident than Mediterranean Europe, where ongoing processes of reterritorialization (particularly regionalism and macro-regionalism) unfold alongside the contested reordering of networks of movement and flow. These sessions invite work that explores the dynamics of Euro-Mediterranean mobility and territoriality, and how they may be linked in everyday European practice. Evidence from the Western Mediterranean, for example, suggests emerging political discourses that (following the idea of the 'spatial turn') have a firmly geographical base: new territories, new centers of power, contested regional spaces, Europe and its infrastructure, new scales, etc... In this session we attempt to view emerging processes of territorialization and mobility in Mediterranean Europe, and what they suggest about changing relations between politics, power, and space. We seek papers that trace these processes in everyday practices such as transport, water, trade, intensive agriculture, information, tourism, or the environment.
