BASED JUST OUTSIDE WROUGHTON, NEAR SWINDON
The Science Museum’s Library and Archives collections attract researchers worldwide, as well as underpinning the work of the Science Museum’s research and exhibition staff. The Science Museum Library and Archives operates across two sites, with a reading room in London and a reading room and storage facility at Wroughton near Swindon. The Archives collections are stored and made accessible from the Wroughton site.
We now have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Archivist at our Wroughton facility, supporting the work of the Archives Team. You will play a key role in the delivery of a high quality, responsive information service to all users. Your professional knowledge of the archival collections will enable you to support users and answer a wide range of enquiries, helping to broaden access to the collections and improve the service provided. Supporting the professional development, care and management of the collections will also be an integral part of your role.
A self-motivated and well-organised individual with excellent interpersonal skills, you will have a working knowledge of archival arrangement, description and cataloguing, archival management and the ability to use the Internet and electronic databases. Good customer service skills are essential, along with a proven ability to work as part of a team. You will be a fully qualified archivist with relevant and demonstrable experience. In addition, the following would be of advantage: experience in the use of Adlib for Archives; working with volunteers; membership of professional associations and an interest in, or willingness to develop, knowledge of the history of science and technology. There will be occasional travel to the Science Museum in London.
