Call for Abstracts: The Politics of Location Revisited: Gender@2012
8th European Feminist Research Conference
May 17-20, 2012 | Budapest, Hungary
Panel Proposal:
Narratives, practices and gendered representations of violence(s):
ethnographic explorations of everyday "resistance" in war ridden
communities
Panel Organisers:
* Kasia Grabska, University of Basel
* Julie Billaud, University of Sussex
* Nicholas Khan, University of Brighton
This panel will investigate the ways in which violence under its various
forms manifests itself, is narrated and used to create a sense of Self
in war ridden communities and in conflict. Violence is inherently shaped
by and affects gender relations. How do actors involved in violent
conflicts decide to inhabit gender based and other forms of violence in
order to preserve a sense of agency? Or on the contrary, to alter its
meaning through mobilising social imaginaries? We look for contributions
that highlight power dynamics that unfold in violent contexts and how
gender constructions shape the way violence is worked out. We invite
papers that critically analyse "violence" and "resistance" and that
speak to academic debates on gender identities constructions in violent
conflicts. Presentations that examine cases of strategic uses of
violence as narrated, practiced and represented are particularly welcome.
Those interested to participate in the panel should send their abstracts
(300 words) to Julie Billaud ([log in to unmask]), Katarzyna Grabska
([log in to unmask]) and Nichola Khan ([log in to unmask])
before the 10th of August.
