Description
Surface Impression is a digital media development agency based in Brighton. We specialise in work for cultural heritage, arts and education organisations and our clients include the National Archives, Arts Council, Jewish Museum, National Motor Museum, British Council and the Ashmolean Museum.
Surface Impression is working with the Cayzer Family Archive to produce a new website that will contain both interpretation and a collections database. The Cayzer Family founded numerous businesses from 1877, including the Clan Line shipping company. The archive consists of documents, letters and artefacts pertaining to both the businesses and the family members.
Working with Surface Impression’s team and the Cayzer Family Archive’s archivist, the successful candidate will:
• Assist the archivist in transferring collections records to the website’s collection management database
• Scan and photograph documents and other objects in the archive and upload the photographs to the database
• Add keywords and other metadata to the object records in the database
• Prepare pages on the website on a variety of topics
• Copy edit text created for the website by other team members
• Liaise with Surface Impression and the Cayzer Family Archive to ensure the smooth running of the project
Some of the work will take place on-site at the archive in SW1, London, and there will also be some requirement to work with the Surface Impression team in Brighton. Travel expenses to Brighton will be paid. The successful candidate will also be able to work from home/their own premises on many tasks.
We can be flexible about when work is undertaken and will try to accommodate any other commitments the successful candidate might have – for example post-graduate studies or other commissions / part time work.
Requirements:
• Excellent written English
• An understanding of the heritage sector as a whole and archives in particular
• Strong communication and collaboration skills
• Familiar with working with collections and with online publishing tools (eg content management systems)
Desirable qualities
• Highly organised
• A qualification or current studies in a relevant degree (especially post-graduate level)
• Previous experience of working with online projects
