If I’d thought to do so, I might have
speculated otherwise, but since I did not--
well, things eventuated elsewise. More
modest quarters in an Austin suburb
allowed the rain to fall unabated upon both
the just and the unjust. Situation normal,
some might say, or have said, as it were.
This constant irritation robs us of the pleasure
we sometimes used to take in sleeping late.
As the talk goes on, we find ourselves rewarded
with profitable contracts, but in other ways
feeling--well, somewhat less amenable
to plausible accusations. Our neighbors’ infidelity
might be an amusing alternative to doing
nothing, but the ingenuity required to keep
a straight face left us in arrears, as though
the talk that goes on night after night were just
a series of colored photos, stuck to a canvas.
"Literature is news that stays news."
