Don,
I often surprise my students when I point out brilliant ideas in their work and sometimes they present their work and dismiss its smartest aspects because they happened "by accident." I tell them that our work is often smarter than we are and we should take credit for it.
I suspect that many of us have had the experience of being cited and thinking "Does this person have a reading comprehension problem or do I have to be more clear in future writing?" It is good to remind ourselves that making someone think (even if they aren't thinking the way we intended) is a mitzva.
