I have to say that I have professional experience of telephone
interpreting in mental health services where it proved to be more
reliable than face-to-face. This was when the psychiatrist and I were
working with an asylum seeker from the Middle-East who we believed had a
psychotic illness. Three sessions with a face-to-face interpreter who
was from the same country and ethnic background as the service user had
proved fruitless. The service user spoke for about three minutes and
this interpreter gave us 30 seconds of translation and minimal symptoms
present. We had become suspicious that the interpreter may be trying to
protect his countryman from the effects of what he may have perceived
the mental health services would dish out. The next session the
face-to-face interpreter was not available and the psychiatrist used
Language Line. During a 1 hour session in which I was present as well we
discovered that the service user had network of paranoid delusions
mainly about Tony Blair (then Prime Minister) spying on him through an
electronic microchip implanted in his brain.
I have not been able to read Jane Fountain's research report referred to
by her and David Ingleby but I would say that telephone interpreting is
not always inappropriate from my experience.

I wonder if you can help. The Bilingual Therapist and Mental Health
Interpreter Forum is trying to collate some evidence to show that
intepreting over the telephone is not suitable for Mental Health
appointments.
Does anyone know of any research studies or have evidence from
interpreters , service providers and/or clients about their experiences
in this area?
Also we would really welcome new members to join our Bilingual Forum.
There is a virtual group mail plus biannual meetings.
