It's strange that you were not able to get those codes working because I was able to use them with Google Goggles. The main issue that I have found with the artistic changes that get made to QR codes is that they only work if you view them from a distance so that all the extra information blurs out.
On a related note Wired UK did an article on custom QR codes a while back, it's referred to here but I'm afraid I can't find a copy of the actual article online.
