Glorias Asiimwe, Libraries Officer at the African Prisons Project, will be providing a unique insight into how her experience of a professional development visit to the UK in 2008 has provided her with the skills, confidence and network of contacts to build a successful career as the only sub-saharan prison librarian.
Glorias will review the impact that her visit, as a recently qualified LIS professional, had on her work within Ugandan prisons and how she used her experiences to develop the provision of library and education services operating as a solo librarian within the challenging environment of an African prison. She will talk about how she continues to develop professionally following her visit and how she has built up an international network of colleagues to support her development.
Glorias will also talk about what she hopes to gain from her current visit to the UK and from her attendance at the 77th IFLA Conference in Puerto Rico, where she is co-presenting a paper titled: "Role of libraries and information in the empowerment of Ugandan women prisoners".
