Trimming the Fat: How do your users filter information and what can you
do about it? By Drew Whitworth

Wednesday, 7 September, 2011 - 09:30 - 16:30
The John Rylands University Library, University of Manchester
Almost all 21st century organisations produce significant amounts of
information with which customers, clients, employees and other users
must constantly interact. With far too much information out there to be
processed, all users filter out much of what they see, instead focusing
on the information which they consider most meaningful. As Information
Professionals our role is to help users focus: but are we aware of the
many ways in which filtering is undertaken?
This workshop will help participants establish the deficiencies in the
information interfaces of their own and other organisations. It will
help participants develop practical strategies for change that
acknowledge not only these obvious problems, but also the channels of
communication and power relationships within the organisation

Suppose a friend has been offered the chance of lifetime: a fantastic
insider deal on an acquisition that will make them a millionaire if they
get in quick. Your instinct says it's a scam but where can you find the
evidence that will convince them? Is the company proposing to replace
your double-glazing financially sound and reliable? Or perhaps you have
been asked for information on starting up as a commercial lupin grower
and the potential market. Where do you go? The number of sites providing
business information seems to increase daily and some are offering free
access. How reliable are they, and what level of quality can you expect
from them? This hands-on workshop will take you through both the key
free and priced resources for tracking down information on companies,
industry sectors and market research. There will be practical sessions
throughout the day so that you can try out some of the sites for
yourself.
Topics covered will include: Company information; Statistics and
industry data; News, blogs and social media
