Hello,

We have this problem too. It only occurs on some article PDFs in ScienceDirect.

Elsevier has suggested that we should

A. Untick the box show PDF in reader. Did not work.

B. Switch to FoxIt reader<http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/>. Works but we cannot do this as it doesn’t work with some of our e-books.

There is also another problem that it is not always possible to save the PDF. So this work around is not always open.

What always seems to work is to e-mail the article to yourself. Then it is savable and printable. But try to put that one into a users guide!

Anyway our patrons use their own computers with their preferred software and it should be up to ScienceDirect to see that the PDFs work with all reasonably new and common operating systems, web browsers and PDF-readers.

One of the articles that does not work for us is

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=MImg&_imagekey=B83W8-51KK2B1-7-1&_cdi=33780&_user=650414&_pii=S0929664610601283&_origin=search&_coverDate=11%2F30%2F2010&_sk=998909988&view=c&wchp=dGLbVlz-zSkWb&md5=541d7b5b37e16045dd25f4bf0c9f3625&ie=/sdarticle.pdf

I tried to untick all the three boxes as you suggested and it was possible print the article but I still couldn’t save it. (Save icon is inactive.)

We have to test this further.

/Axel

Hi,

Elsevier have come back to me, saying that they have found a solution to this issue. You go into Adobe X, click edit, then preferences, internet, then untick the 3 boxes which are ticked.

I've tried this and it doesn't work in either browser for me. I was wondering if it works for anyone who is having a similar problem.

Thanks,

Sharon

Hi Mies and Richard,

Thanks for coming back to me. I'm still having a problem with Firefox as well as IE. Yes, I can right click and save the pdf, but even this is not intuitive for users who are going to want to save, after opening the pdf, by using the icon. I have suggested to Elsevier that they need to work something out.

We're also seeing this. I've quickly tested the pdf saving function in Chrome, Opera and FireFox and I've found no difficulties. The only thing that seem to work with IE was to right click on the pdf link, save the file and then open it in Adobe.

This is absolutely annoying. Now how am I going to explain this to our users without them looking at me crossed eyed and think I'm a bit loony?

There is a brief discussion of this on the Adobe forum at http ://forums.adobe.com/thread/794935?decorator=print& displayFullThread =true

Another option appears to be to force the PDF to load into the PDF Reader application itself, rather than in the web browser. Load the Reader application then go to Edit --> Preferences --> Internet then un-tick the option to 'Display PDF in browser' . The user who brought this problem to my attention says this allowed him to then save the PDF , although it does not appear to work for me. I am able to right-click the PDF on the ScienceDirect site and select 'save as' , but he says the option to save is absent when he tries that.

Both of the above are only workarounds and neither is ideal.

Yes, we have this problem too. Can you right-click on the PDF and select 'Save as...'?

Hi,

Is anyone else having problems saving pdfs on ScienceDirect when using either Firefox or Internet Explorer 8 and Adobe X. When a pdf is opened and you try to save it using the save icon, nothing happens. I've reported this to Elsevier , but they said that Adobe don't provide support and are unwilling to comment on the issue. Elsevier have suggested using Foxit . I have pointed out that their product should be compatible with the most widely used reader.
