hello to all,
well, while we are discussing pop philosophy about film, although I must say that we must be careful about comrade Zizek; firstly he can be extremely difficult as well as provocative and is often humorous. it seems to me that we must not dismiss people because they are funny or difficult or gnomic or prone to enjoy popular culture. My experience of most people at 'Film-Philosophy' is that they are, generally, friendly and extremely smart and understanding. Having said all that, I am disturbed about some of the reponses to challenging cinema, for instance take the response to Godard, especially his new movie. Do people like Mark Kermode (often refered to as Doctor Kermode, as though this was some form of uncritical aproval) who has violently attacked Godard's 'Film Socialisme'. Are we to assume that a popular form of film analysis must also be easy, or should we say simple minded. I would like to see the level of debate that we (the F-P community) can find its way into the broader film analysis/review textual village. Let's try to generate the kind of lively debate we have in this space into the general discourse about cinema.
Today the Guardian's (A British daily newspaper) regular Friday film and music supplement had a full front page still from 'Harry Potter' ( I don't know what number we are on) on the same day that Godard's film and Terence Malik's new offering are both released, this is clearly indicative of the current climate
we find ourselves in. What is important is that we (us subscribers) continue to actively articulate the rigorous responses to both popular and other cinemas. I have mentioned before that the most arresting film I have seen this year is 'The Screaming Man', as far as I know it had hardly any screenings outside of London, I saw it in Manchester, for us to continue we must not only comment on current cinema but also actively campaign for the exhibition of film_in our local communities._I
It is clear that this is a process that we must involve ourselves in. When I was a film programer it was clear that if you had confidence and could persuade your management to stay with adventure the audience will arrive.
