Memoires: Disability Culture
Liberty Festival 2011:  Call for submissions

Submissions of Disability Arts and Deaf Arts work, from 1950 to the present day, are invited for inclusion in a video piece to be screened as part of the 2011 Liberty Festival in the Clore Ballroom, Southbank Centre on 3rd September.

Caglar Kimyoncu and Simon McKeown’s composite video work will present a playful whistle-stop retrospective of Disability and Deaf Arts over the last sixty years and their contribution to London culture.  Splicing together archive footage and imagery with contemporary material, it will refer back to the celebration of the 1951 Festival of Britain.  You can submit your own work, or archive images or documentation of Disability Arts work and events from the past.

The work will be screened at various intervals throughout the 3rd September.  Please note that the video piece will not include sound and will act as a backdrop for other events.  Submitted works may be cropped or only excerpts included, and may be juxtaposed or overlaid with other images.  All will be credited.

Moving image and still images are welcome.  We will accept VHS, DVD, Mini DV, VCD.  If you have moving image work in any other format, please contact us.

The name of the artist (if not your own work) and an assurance of the artist’s permission or of copyright

Deadline:  Submitted work and all details must be received by 12 noon on Monday 8th August 2011.

About the artists:
Caglar Kimyoncu is a filmmaker, photographer, curator and consultant. He is founding director of filmpro limited, which supports artists who work with digital media.  Between 1999 and 2006 he directed seven London Disability Film Festivals and has curated programmes for events in Helsinki, Berlin, Paris, Auckland, Adelaide, Calgary, Munich and Brazil.

Artist Simon McKeown, recipient of DaDaFest International Artist 2010-11, has twenty years’ experience in commercial animation, special effects and gaming.  In the past year his works have appeared on BBC City Screens across the UK and in over twenty venues including the Smithsonian Institution International Gallery, Washington DC.
