The only reasons Atticus seems to be known at all today are because he was a
patron of Cicero and he was wealthy, but more for the former than the
latter, because his money was through inheritance and real estate deals, and
only his patronage seems to have been of any real note. I suppose it is that
connection, as patron of the arts, that has motivated Harry Polkinghorn and
the publisher of the current pub. to name their publications The Atticus
Review. Though it seems very likely that neither of these two Atticus
Reviews are published by wealthy people. My connection with the current
Atticus Review is via the editor of the mixed media section, Matt Mullins,
who is doing interesting work himself in online literary/multimedia.

There are, though, Jim.more serious, but ambivalent, resonances:
"Atticus' wealth grew by inheritance and through his skillful dealings in
real estate. Using this wealth to support his love of letters, he maintained
a staff of slaves <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_slaves> trained as
copyists <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyist> and
book-binders<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bookbinding>,
and published, amongst other things, the works of his friend
Cicero<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cicero>
"
(our friend Wikipedia)
"Mr Pope was with Sir Godfrey Kneller one day, when his nephew, a Guinea
trader, came in. 'Nephew, (said Sir Godfrey), you have the honour of seeing
the two greatest men in the world.' - 'I don't know how great you may be,
(said the Guinea-man), but I don't like your looks: I have often bought a
man much better than both of you together, all muscles and bones, for ten
guineas!'
-Dr Warburton. From Anecdotes ... of Mr Pope ... By the Rev. Joseph Spence.
1820.
