Tools like Google Earth offer so much more than the ability to look for your house on Street View! Digital mapping tools can help you explore locations, record field trips and visualise data in interesting ways. Mobile technologies mean that social networks are as much about where you are as what you are up to. But how do you make the most of them?
This highly practical workshop will let you get hands-on with the technologies as well as helping you explore the opportunities and implications of what they have to offer. The topics covered include:
• Mapping your own world using Google Maps and Google Earth
• Geo-tagging: adding location information to digital media
• Data mash-ups: combining information from a range of sources and presenting them using maps.
• An introduction to augmented reality and mobile geo-location technology
• Managing the risks of publicising your personal location details
This isn’t just for geographers! People who are interested in exploring how geo-enabled technologies can be applied to their own practice or who are involved in field-based activities will find this workshop of value.
No experience of web development or sophisticated mapping tools is required.
