Hello!
I am the social services coordinator at the National Immigrant Justice
Center’s Counter-Trafficking Program in Chicago. Due to the trauma
experienced by the human trafficking survivors we serve, we have several
clients currently in urgent need of pro bono therapy and counseling.
(We only serve foreign-national survivors. Due to their lack of legal
status here in the U.S., most victims we work with are waiting on their
work authorization, and thus don’t have the funds to pay for counseling.
Their lack of legal immigration status also disqualifies them from
many low cost counseling programs.)
Trafficking victims suffer from varying forms of trauma. Some have
experienced more extreme forms of abuse including rape, beatings,
complete social isolation, and withholding of food, while others have
experienced less obvious forms of abuse such as verbal threats of
violence or deportation, degradation, withholding of identifying
documents, and threats of harm to family members back home. Due to the
extent of the trauma our clients have endured, the need for pro bono
psychological care is tremendous.
The people we serve have been forced to engage in either commercial sex
or labor, and made to believe they’d experience serious harm if they
tried to leave the "work" situation. Our labor trafficking victims have
been forced to work in a wide range of situations, including domestic
work (nanny/maid/servile marriage), garment making, nail salons, hair
braiding, gas stations, & restaurant work. Our sex trafficking
survivors have been exploited in all sectors of the commercial sex
industry, from high-end outcall services to stripping to street
prostitution.
NIJC's current client needs include counselors with experience in areas
including trauma, child abuse, domestic violence, torture, war crimes,
and sexual abuse/assault, counseling for adults and minors, Spanish
language counseling, and over-the phone counseling for our clients
without reliable forms of transportation. Counseling in various other
languages is also needed.
If you are interested in working with one of our clients, please contact
me directly. Thank you for your time!
