Exercise is great, but a few words of caution might be warranted for those who
spent the snowy winter and wet spring in hibernation.
.
Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Maurizio Cibischino, who practices in East Stroudsburg,
offers some advice for adults.
.
He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, holds a
certificate of added qualification in orthopedic sports medicine and is a
member of Pocono Medical Center's medical staff.
.
[This is a question and answer formated article, these are the questions Dr.
Cibischino answers in this article.]
.
Which sports are most dangerous?
Does the surface that a sport is played on contribute to the danger of the
sport?
Do sports injuries vary with age?
How do you know whether you should go to the doctor for a sports injury?
What if an injury doesn't seem that serious?
Can a physical therapist decide what to do?
Does an orthopedic surgeon always prescribe surgery?
How can a person keep from being injured?
Should a person just keep away from exercise?
....
Answer to the last question:
"No! The benefits of exercise are tantamount in importance. It is vital that
our society gets enough exercise. It is important for cardiac health as well as
for overall well-being. We are not trying to scare people. The health benefits
from exercise far outweigh the risks of sports participation. Warm-ups and
stretching help to minimize the risks."
