Post Doctoral Position – 18 Months – Data Integration for Biological Chemistry - Syngenta R&D
The harnessing of large and diverse data sources is a pre-requisite for efficient research in a life science based commercial organisation. Syngenta R&D and the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) have funded an 18 month project aimed at bridging the gaps between chemical and biological data, and between external and internal data sources.
Enhanced chemistry functionality will be added to the Ondex data integration and biological visualisation network tools, are project software components are open source and the software output from this project will also be open source. This will enable further incremental development and collaborative projects which could lead to novel knowledge service products. The tools will be able to be deployed in large scale (e.g. grid or cloud computing) environments, without the burden of restrictive licensing. These large scale computing environments, and compatible tools, will likely be needed for dealing with the massive data sets being produced by current and future instrumentation used in biological research. Code development will be managed by our project partners at Rothamsted, industrial usage and applications will be managed at Syngenta. Syngenta scientific and IS staff will engage in workshops to define industrial use cases and requirements, and to demonstrate intermediate versions of the software, providing feedback to further refine it.
The post holder should be of post-doctoral or equivalent level of qualification, with a Ph.D degree and/or research experience in the overlapping areas of chemistry, biology and informatics. Knowledge of scientific software usage and key life science database resources is a pre-requisite. You will be the primary resource engaged in use case and requirements gathering, in coordinating demonstrations to all stakeholders and to working on usage and uptake with Syngenta scientists.
