LES AMOURS D’ASTREE ET DE CELADON
via Eric Rohmer
De poesie sauvage et charme bucolique.
A sham.
Should I tell his brother?
Take him to the castle.
Rest easily, deduced
exactly. As the druid showed us in his mirror.
Everyone amazed--knowing, eyes me in the picture.
Carefree idleness . . .
embellish it.
Looks like someone we know.
Among the druid girls I choose . . .
Druid maidens must always sleep alone.
Only laugh of preventing your gaze.
Nothing can irk me in Alexia’s company.

Initially drafted while watching the first Washington DC screening of Eric Rohmer's last film, an experience I had been uneasily anticipating because it was apparently a pastoral. But after reading around in the criticism which this film had elicited, I walked into the theatre expecting to enjoy subtle revisiting of aspects, even scenes, from his films set in contemporary France. I wasn't disappointed. In fact, Shakespeare (rather than Spenser) came to mind.
The trailer and two four minute clips from this film can be accessed via youtube, while the dvd was available for rental at the best video store in this area.
