Sharon, I'm with you here. I don't write to the GP as a matter of course
but if I am, I always send a copy of my management report so that they know
the advice I am providing and offer the option of a discussion about return
to work if they wish.
My impression is that it is also cheaper - you get more for less - as
opposed to my days working for one of the large providers who insisted on
having a very impersonal letter asking a set number of standard questions,
one of which was whether the GP could think of any adjustments in the
workplace that would enable the employee to come back to work - duh!

If I am seeing/reviewing someone and think that we could accomodate them
in the workplace I might send the GP a fax (with consent) saying exactly
what is is that we can offer the individuals in terms of
restrictions/redeployemnt and on what time scales. This has prompted GPs
to ring and discuss (great) and on occasion thay have sent consultants
discharge letters etc without charging me.
Have to say that I dont do this in all circumstances (things like
routine ops I dont bother) but for "serious" illness or injury where
there are obvious work implications I try to engage with the Gp as much
as possible. As we work in a challanging environment with challanging
individuals it is understandable why GPs will err on the side of caution
as they are not aware what kind of redeployment policies we have

I often give the employee a copy of the proposed RTW plan to discuss
with their GP. Several GP's have then reflected this on their fit note.

We are looking into how best we can get GP's on board when trying to get
members of staff back to work after long term sickness. We have thought
about simply writing to individual GP's to advise them of what is
possible in terms of adjustments with a request that they discuss it
with their patient. Do any other members of the list do anything
similar? If so, do you have any letter templates that you would be
prepared to share with us?
