Monitoring Parents:
Science, evidence, experts and the new parenting culture
Organised by the Centre for Parenting Culture Studies and
the Kent Centre for Law, Gender and Sexuality
13th and 14th September, University of Kent
This event, reflecting on the problems of the rise of 'parenting science' and the 'parenting expert', features more than 30 papers including contributions by colleagues from Canada, the US, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark, India, Spain, Italy, Australia, as well as England, Wales and Scotland. In the light of the proliferation of strong claims that argue neuroscience provides reliable evidence about how parents should raise their children, discussion of this topic comprises a special focus for this event. As well as papers considering the way claims about 'the brain' are now influencing social policy and parental experience, the event will feature two keynote sessions on this subject. We are especially pleased that John T. Bruer, President of the James S. McDonnell Foundation in St. Louis, and Raymond Tallis, doctor, retired clinical scientist and philosopher, will be giving keynote lectures. The former is author of The Myth of the First Three Years (The Free Press) and the latter author of Aping Mankind: Neuromania, Darwinitis and the Misrepresentation of Mankind (Acumen Publishing), and they will be discussing ideas from these books. Other topics that will be addressed include the relationship between 'parenting' and schooling; infant feeding; discipline; the sexualisation debate; policy and 'early intervention'; fatherhood; surrogacy; adoption; PGD; and discipline.
Registration for the event costs:
Waged (2 days) £85
Waged (1 day) £45
Unwaged / student (1 or 2 days) £35
